Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Serial Key
Hi Eric,I have purchased 1 windows 2012 Standard License. My hardware is of 2 CPU and 64 GB of RAM. I have installed 2 VMs onto the hyperV of windows 2012. Now I want to install windows 2008 R2 onto those VMS. My questions is how can I activate those windows 2008 R2 Servers as I do not ahve any key for those. I am only having the Activation Key for the windows 2012 Standard Server. Any supporting document you suggest for these licensing and activation process. Thanks in advance.

will this work if you use MAK activation instead of KMS? Weird this is that I have checked the keys from the VLC portal and the MAK key for server 2008R2 standard and server 2008R2 enterprise is the exact same key!!
I have two HP DL380G9s running server 2008R2 standard, used a MAK key to activate it two weeks ago. We need to upgrade it to 2008R2 Enterprise for memory access. I put a test machine together, DL380G6 and installed 2008R2 standard, did not activate it, did the first round of updates and then used MS backup to create a BMR image. Ran the upgrade following your instructions and it worked using the temp key from the MS site. Did the upgrade and two reboots and it came up running enterprise, ran first round of updates. Put the HP Oem media in and rebooted then ran the repair option from the boot media, restored it to standard. My only concern is the keys. Any issues I should worry about ?
HiWas the issue about getting back the RDP activated. ? I have the same issue after upgrading from 2008R2 STD to enterprise. ? As well Ram limited to 4 Gb. after cahnging the license to Open license.
I just upgraded a 2008R2 standard running exchange2010 on an hp-G7, no problem. I virtualized it beforehand onto a VMware cluster before hand then did the upgrade to enterprise, again no problem it did not blow up exchange. I did however before hand make sure that RDP was turned on to the middle one.
If i were to upgrade my existing windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise server to windows server 2012 i would first choose the edition and then i would check the upgrade paths. I have created a table which shows whether you can upgrade to windows server 2012 with you present operating system.
In this post i will be showing you how to upgrade a windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. Note that the existing server is in workgroup, do not consider this post to upgrade your domain controller to windows server 2012. I will be creating a separate post to show the upgrade of domain controller running on windows server 2008 r2 to windows server 2012.

You can perform an in-place upgrade of Windows server 2008 R2 SP1 (STD/ENT) to Windows Server 2012 (STD/DC). Note that you must have Service Pack 1 installed on your Windows Server 2008 R2 first. Upgrading Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Server Core installation of Windows Server 2012 is not yet supported. Also Windows Server 2012 requires a Windows Server 2003 forest functional level so check the forest functional level and set it to windows 2003 or higher than that. For more info, refer to this link :- _ServerRoles

If a final customer brought a new server with HP Windows server 2012 Std Rok, but he has the windows 2008 server Std R2 installed and did not receive any windows key (nor of the HP Windows server 2012 Std Rok neither of the Windows 2008 Server Std R2), what can be done to know if the Windows 2008 Server Std R2 is legal?
Windows Server 2008 Datacenter. Windows Server 2008 Datacenter delivers an enterprise-class platform for deploying business-critical applications. It helps customers improve availability and security features, and reduce infrastructure costs, by consolidating applications with virtualization licensing rights. And with Windows Server 2008 Datacenter edition, customers receive unlimited virtual instances per license.
This really comes into play during maintenance windows. For example, if you're using VMware, then you might be using VMotion to migrate VMs while you patch, install new hardware or make repairs on the host machine. But suppose you are already at capacity in terms of the number of concurrent running instances on each of your VM hosts. When you move a VM over to another host, you'll be out of compliance from a licensing perspective. It's important to note that there is nothing technical in the software that prevents this, and Microsoft understands the importance and the associated requirements of periodic maintenance, so the licensing army isn't going to hunt you down for migrating a VM to an "overloaded" host for an hour or so. But a license is a license -- it's not Swiss cheese -- and such temporary solutions are not meant to be permanent. If you want more flexibility over the long term, choose the Enterprise edition of Windows Server 2008 and then only run three VMs concurrently, leaving you room for one more slot, or choose the Datacenter edition (more in a moment on that).
